ARM designed and documented this commercial project the Australian Council for Educational Research, a body that researches and develops educational resources.
The scope involved the reconception of the corporate vision of this unique research community. The lattice pattern introduced in the aluminium screen to the atrium is based on a Delaunay mesh. Robert Delaunay was French artist (1885-41) and his work has influenced both artists and scientists and is present today in the way 2D & 3D software programs calculate and define surfaces.
The pattern has been scaled to be engaging at this proximity and be highly visually permeable but offer a sense of privacy.

The City Council of Perth has chosen ARM in conjunction with CCN Architects as architects to design a new arena. The Arena is a very flexible design, allowing for crowds of up to 14,500 in concert mode and up to 13,000 in tennis mode. On the other hand the Arena can be closed down for an intimate concert mode with 3000 people. It will be able to accommodate shows with a centre stage or end stage, and performances in the round such as motor cross, equestrian, and ice shows. The Arena has an operable roof to allow natural light to flood the centre court.
The site for the new Arena is at the west end of the Northbridge Link, between the existing Perth Entertainment Centre and the Freeway. The Arena will be a catalyst for the renewal of the whole Northbridge Link precinct, kick starting the EPRA master plan for this vital new piece of urban renewal.

] Digital Harbour – Port 1010 [

Filed under: Folio | Architecture — Martine @ 7:24 pm

Port 1010 represents stage two of Digital Harbour’s technology-based community, an incubator hub with a focus on offices for new enterprises in the IT industry.
The intriguing facade layout is generated by alternating these panels and a solar control glazed curtain wall.

The panels are arranged in exactly parallel layers which produce a visual effect called the Munsterburg Illusion. This fascinating phenomenon was first described by Richard Gregory after he noticed the pattern of tiles on Cafe in Bristol, UK. The presence of the coloured horizontal line at each floor level is essential to the illusory effect.
Construction of Port 1010 reflects current organisational culture, with flexible, functional floors comprising features such as “no ceilings” over open-planned spaces. This facilitates easy technology upgrades, rapid space configuration and enhanced cross-pollination of ideas between tenants.
